Alan Huynh

Alan Huynh is the Youth Chair of the Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia andVice – Chair (Youth) of the Ethnic Communities Councils of Queensland – the national and state peakbodies which represent and promote issues on behalf of Australians from culturally and linguisticallydiverse (CALD) backgrounds to government and the broader community. In 2008, he led a team of 15 volunteers to create a new community program – the ‘Partners in Peace’youth leadership camp, with the objective of building self esteem among young refugee students. Alan has also volunteered as a tutor and mentor for young migrant/refugee students with the Queensland Program for Assistance of Survivors of Torture and Trauma. For his work with young people from CALD backgrounds, Alan was the recipient of the inaugural Australian Human Rights Commission Young People’s Human Rights Medal and the 2008 Queensland Multicultural ‘Outstanding Young Achiever’ Award. He was selected to attend the 18th Ship for World Youth program, the Australia 2020 Youth Summit and recently received the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award through completing activities that promoted cultural awareness and understanding. Alan has regularly been invited to speak to schools, community organisations and conferences about youth participation, community engagement and cultural diversity issues.
